Travel Medicine
Travel can be an exciting adventure. Travel medicine is a specialty field concerned with the health of international travelers. By preparing ahead of time, you can reduce your risk of travel-related illness and ensure you remain healthy and happy throughout your journey.
At CPC Multi-Specialty Group, we help patients travel to wherever they’re going in the world – in the safest way possible for their health. We do this through vaccinations, medication, and education.
You can count on individualized travel advice supervised by a physician-expert in travel medicine. We rely on recommendations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) and other important resources, so our patients are among the most informed and prepared travelers.
Vaccines & Immunizations
Having the proper vaccinations is the first line of defense against many travel-related illnesses. Which vaccines you need will depend on where you’re traveling, your immunization and health history, as well as your planned activities or concerns.
It is important to plan ahead. In some cases, you may need to get vaccinated as early as 2 months prior to travel – especially if you need multiple doses of a vaccine. Also, vaccines need time to build up immunity in your body; it typically requires some time before being considered effective and safe for you to travel.
Examples of travel and specialty vaccines include those vaccines designed to prevent:
- Cholera
- Hepatitis A & B
- Influenza
- Japanese encephalitis
- Meningococcal infection
- Polio
- Rabies
- Typhoid
- Yellow fever
You’ll want to consult your travel medicine provider at CPC because the vaccine requirements for each country may change, depending on current outbreaks and health risks.
In some cases, medications may be available depending on your travel itinerary and health concerns. For example, while there is no vaccine for malaria – which is prevalent in the continent of Africa and in some countries in Asia. There are, however, antimalarial drugs your doctor can prescribe if you are expected to be in a high-risk area for the disease.
Country-Specific Education
The travel medicine providers at CPC can provide helpful medical information and guidance for your travels. Our goal is to help reduce the risk of illness and injury for our patients who travel overseas. As with the immunizations, it will depend on where you are traveling and what your activities may consist of. For example, we can alert you to areas of the world with new or wide-ranging health threats, as well as specific health-related travel requirements, such as proof of vaccinations, depending on where you’re going.
In the era of COVID-19, there are health risks no matter where you travel. We can help you make sense of the changing rules and regulations regarding the coronavirus pandemic, and where the current hotspots are – as well as provide tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe while traveling.
